For the Impact2 Woman Entrepreneur of the Year Award 2018, Dialogue Place is involved in selecting the semi-finalist from Italy to compete in the grand finale, which is held in Paris. Impact2 2018, the seventh edition of event, is a global event dedicated to supporting impactful innovation and successfully bringing together funders and entrepreneurs, as described Mrs. Ana María Hidalgo, Mayor of Paris.
“There is no tool for development more effective than the empowerment of women.”
(Former UN Secretary-General, Kofi Annan)
Experts argue that women are considered nurturing by nature and it is the reason women entrepreneurs are turning to social entrepreneurship, as their work is an extension of how they view the world. Despite facing challenges like access to finance, information, training and business networks along with family concerns, women all over the world are now becoming actively involved in creating social enterprises that have a social and/or environmental impact.
A great example would be, Ms. Nonhlanhla Joye, the winner of the 2017 Woman Entrepreneur of the Year Award. Her social enterprise, Umgibe Farming Organics is an ecological, organic and income-generating farming system which targets grassroots farmers from the sub-economic townships of South Africa. The project uses an innovative mechanism of cultivating vegetables using recycled bags suspended on a supportive wooden structure.
This is the enterprise of a woman entrepreneur who started her work after being diagnosed with cancer in 2014 due to her inability to provide for her family following her diagnosis. Since her recognition at Impact2 2017, her start-up has now become involved in training community members and therefore has not only helped create income-generating opportunities for the farmers but has also made an environmental impact by minimising the use of water in their farming techniques and using absolutely no chemical fertilisers or pesticides.
